Second Chance Programme is not alone: five years ago, after a talk by SCP at Brisbane Girls Grammar School, an SCP school committee was formed and has grown in numbers – and effectiveness. Not only has the BGGS committee raised a considerable amount of money for homeless women it has also provided countless numbers of comfort packs, (toiletries), starter packs (for women moving into a home and in need of towels and bed linen and saucepans and cutlery etc). BGGS SCP raises awareness throughout the community – as well as within the school – and on International Women’s Day the committee made hundreds of paper dolls to symbolize women’s strength and support: when joined, the dolls extended from the top of the building, almost to the ground.
In 2009, BGGS SCP is becoming more engaged with young homeless women – and is in working with them on a mural.
St Aidans Anglican Girls School has also formed a SCP committee which is very active and which has amassed a huge number of items of assistance to homeless women. (They have delivered many comfort packs to Roma House.) SCP newsletter has covered in greater detail some of the projects that they have initiated. Ipswich Girls Grammar School has a very active SCP committee that has raised money for homeless women in the local area. One of their most successful projects during winter was ‘share the warmth’ – a blanket drive.
