Who We Are

Second Chance Programme Fund Raising Group Inc (SCP) was set up to address the distressing problem of women’s homelessness. Sadly, the need for accommodation and support for homeless women is even greater now than it was when SCP started in 2001. And the biggest increase in homelessness has been in young women between the ages of 15- 19.

SCP does not raise money to buy buildings or pay salaries. As an organisation, SCP has no building, and no paid staff. (Committee members however have secure and extensive filing systems and an exemplary record of account keeping.) Apart from the fee for public liability insurance, every cent raised by SCP is used to ‘get women off the streets’ and to help them take control of the lives.

SCP is a small committee of dedicated people committed to fund raising. Members include dale spender, Pia du Pradal, Marjorie Morton, Vicki Scott, Abby Hills, Cate Heyworth-Smith, Kathleen Noonan and Zara Sexton.

What We Do

Well over 200 women who would otherwise have been sleeping rough have been housed through the SCP partnership with the Brisbane Housing Company and other agencies – through the ‘bridge the gap program’. Close to fifty women have been accommodated in Bed 14 at the Anglican Women’s Hostel, and have been provided with counselling, services, and assistance with appropriate accommodation.

Because it is young women who are now in such great need funds have been provided to Bahloo to reunite young women with their supportive families. SCP is negotiating with agencies such as Othila’s (that provides accommodation and services for young women) with the aim of supporting their projects.

You Can Help

If you want to help, you don’t have to be a committee member: SCP encourages everyone to do some fundraising. We have been privileged to receive cheques and bank deposits from so many hardworking individuals who have run raffles, organised morning teas, sold cakes and sweets, and undertaken other money-making activities at their workplace or among their friends – and forwarded the proceeds to SCP. This is how we have been able to make a difference in the lives of so many women.
